If you are never going back to 7, former the drive, pop the disk/jump drive in and follow the prompts. Easy and quick.
If you might go back to 7, install without formatting first and you'll have a month to revert to 7.

I read that if you go this route, you have to buy a license for Windows 10.

Check your driver support for wifi/Ethernet so you can have the driver on a USB stick and ready if need be.

Just did one to my laptop with the USB flash drive version on a new SSD. Installation took about 2 minutes, it was impressive.

The way I did it was to first do an in place update from your current os, to validate the license. Then do a clean install of windows 10 over that install.

Check driver availability, back up important shit, run Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade from downloadable flash image. Then.... Once the upgrade is done and your hardware is registered with Microsoft, boot from said image, format hard drive, install Windows 10, drivers, programs, etc... If you try to do a clean install without first doing the free upgrade you will have to buy a license.

Make sure you sign into a microsoft account and the windows 10 upgrade is activated before you wipe it for the clean install. I skipped this step and had to reinstall 7, upgrade, activate, then clean install again. Otherwise not bad!

You have to upgrade and make sure 10 is activated on a microsoft account to lock in your free 10 license.

Got it. I’m using a new drive, leaving the old one alone, so I’ll be able to retreat if necessary.

Fun Jack Fact: I have touched that vehicle on two different occasions at two different locations. First at the NC Museum of Art in 2013, and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland last August.

I’ve done the install/upgrade process a few times and it seems to work well, though it’s time consuming.

Random driver issues are a pain. The Mrs. has an older dell laptop that I upgrade to 10 on a whim and the webcam/mic did not play nice at all and I ended up rolling it back to 7 just to turn off the array mic.

It’s pretty clean. Just do the additional steps to sign in without a Microsoft account. Then you have a local admin account to use later. After that use a ms account to log in.

You can clone the old drive to the new if you want to get your activation. And drive changes are not enough of a hardware change to require a reactivation.

If you don’t have a license, do any sort of an in place upgrade , ensure your system is online (shows Windows 10) activated. Then, you can format and install from scratch.
Last I've read, Microsoft was about to allow registering w10 with the old w7 licenses as well, without doing the upgrade first - not sure if that has happened or not.

I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga that has Win 10 on it. The machine that we've been discussing here is my primary home desktop. I bought a new, larger SSD for the desktop and thought I'd try Win 10 on that machine as well. Now, since this Oppo conversation, I've decided to stick with 7, at least for a while. As of right now, Microsoft says the Win 10 upgrade will cease being free July 29th.

I’ve kept my primary desktop on 7 as well, but all my laptops and my work machines are on W10. There really aren’t any problems with 10 - only reason why I am not doing my desktop is the fact it is 7-8 years old, it runs my Plex, my Lightroom for photo editing, and all my media is on there - reinstalling stuff would be a pain :)
If you like W10 on your laptop, you’ll have a few months to decide if you want it on your desktop. I have one issue with W10 - there is nothing on it that would make me update from W7. Otherwise, it is a nice OS.

That nails how I feel about it. How much photography do you do? Canon or Nikon?
MUSASHI66
> Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo

Canon - heavily invested at this point. I have a 50D and 6D, plus 16-35mm f4L and 70-200mm f2.8L, and EOS-M with the 22mm prime. Plus, my dad has a 5D MK II and 24-70mm f2.8L, 70-200mm F2.8L IS, Tokina 100mm Macro, Canon 50mm f1.4 and a Canon 400mm f5.6L, so I simply can’t go in any other direction.
Now, how much do I shoot....not enough, that’s for sure, especially for all this gear. I do a few trips to the mountains every year for photography - I go more often to hike with the dogs, but it is too hard to drag all my camera gear with them. I love water lilies and I go to our botanical gardens every year to shoot them. I do some other, random stuff as well, when I feel the urge for some photography.
To many hobbies, not enough hours in a day....
Some of my stuff

Yes. The only tip I have is if you’re installing from USB remember to turn off safe boot and format the stick FAT32. Took me an entire night to figure out what went wrong.
